Use a Mac Studio or Mac mini as a home AI server you can reach from anywhere
Short answer: pick the Mac by how much memory your models need, keep it awake and plugged in, run your models and agents on it, and reach it with a remote access app that keeps terminals running and can open its local ports on your other devices. Lumzoi Desk does that last part without router setup.
Which Mac
Apple silicon Macs share one pool of fast memory between the CPU and GPU, which is why they run large language models well for their size and power use. The memory is the number that matters:
- Mac mini suits coding agents, builds, dev servers and smaller local models. It’s quiet, small and cheap to leave on.
- Mac Studio has far more memory, so it can run much larger models, or several at once, alongside your agents.
- An iMac or a MacBook Pro you already own works too, as long as it can stay on and awake.
Every Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later works with Lumzoi Desk.
Set it up to stay on
- Keep it awake. In System Settings, open Energy and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off.
- Start after a power cut. In the same place, turn on Start up automatically after a power failure.
- Sign in automatically if the Mac sits somewhere safe, so your tools start after a restart.
- Run your models and agents the way you normally do: a local model server, a coding agent in a terminal, a long build.
Reach it from anywhere
Install Desk Host on the Mac and Lumzoi Desk on your iPhone, iPad or laptop. Then, from any network:
- Check on agents. Open the Mac’s terminal. Shells keep running when you disconnect and come back as tabs with everything they printed.
- Use the desktop. See and control the whole screen when you need a GUI: a model browser, an editor, a dashboard.
- Open what it serves. A tunnel brings the Mac’s local model server or dev server to your laptop at
localhost, as if it ran there, without exposing it to the internet. - Move files both ways: datasets in, results out.
Lumzoi Desk connects directly when the network allows it and through an encrypted relay when it doesn’t, so there’s no port forwarding or VPN to set up.
Things to know
- If the Mac restarts, shells stop, as in any terminal; services you start with
launchdcome back on their own. - A Mac doing heavy work all day still needs air around it.
- Tunnels to a phone or tablet run while Lumzoi Desk is open, because iOS pauses apps in the background. For long sessions against a local model server, use a laptop.
