How to help your parents with their Mac remotely

, The Lumzoi team

Short answer: set up a remote access app on their Mac once, while you’re with them. After that, start with a chat or a call, and ask to see their screen only when words aren’t enough. A good app shows them who’s asking and lets them say no, or allow viewing without control.

Before you need it: set it up once

Remote help is easiest when the first install happens in person, or over a video call, because macOS asks the person at the Mac to approve screen access.

With Lumzoi Desk:

  1. On their Mac, install Desk Host. It runs in the menu bar.
  2. Open it and give it the two permissions macOS asks for (screen recording and accessibility). Desk Host walks through them.
  3. Note the Mac’s Desk ID. On your phone, add it in Lumzoi Desk with a name you’ll recognise, like “Dad’s iMac”.
  4. In System Settings, check the Mac doesn’t go to sleep while they’re away from it, if you’ll help when they’re not at the desk.

There’s nothing to change on their router. Lumzoi Desk connects directly when it can and through its relay when it can’t, so it works on their home Wi-Fi and on your mobile data.

When they need help: talk first

Most problems are solved by talking: “click the Apple menu, then System Settings”. With Lumzoi Desk you can chat or call the person at the Mac without opening the screen. Messages and calls arrive as notifications on both sides, and the conversation stays with the session for next time.

When words aren’t enough: ask to see the screen

Ask for the screen from the same session. On their Mac, Desk Host shows your device’s name and asks them to approve it. They choose what you may do:

  • View only, so you can see what they see and guide them.
  • Control, so you can click and type for them.

They can end the session from the menu bar at any time. Everything between your device and their Mac is encrypted end to end, including through the relay.

Files and the small things

Need the scanned form, or want to send them the right printer driver? Browse their Mac’s files and move files either way. Transfers pick up where they left off if the connection drops.

A few habits that help

  • Agree on how you’ll start: “I’ll message you first” means a request on their screen is never a surprise.
  • Never accept a request you didn’t expect, and tell them the same. Desk Host warns about this too.
  • Keep the session: next time, the chat history is there, and their Mac knows your device.
